Looking straight across from this viewing point, you are facing due north. The Blackstairs Mountain Range rises on the northern skyline. From left to right, we can see The White Mountain Ridge, The Blackstair, The Scullogue Gap (near Kiltealy), Knockroe and Mount Leinster.

Nearby and to your right is Carrig Hill. The Boro river flows in the valley and along its banks are the old Wilton Mills and Wilton Castle.

An ancient roadway, dating back to the 1600s crossed over Bree Hill, down to the Boro river and on through the old coach road towards Caim. To this day, the crossing point at the river is visible at the Glibín Stones.

Bree Hill was part of the Alcock Estate at Wilton Castle and was planted with beech trees to provide firewood for its many fireplaces, it now is owned and run by Coillte. As you journey on our walks, you can see that Bree Hill is a working forest and that some areas have been felled and then replanted recently. Some of the Beech trees have survived and are particularly evident on the perimeters of the hill.

Enjoy the tranquil setting and birdsong. The eerie sound of the buzzard is heard frequently and keep an eye out for our native red squirrel or a furtive fox.

You are now more than halfway on the Wilton Walk and The Beech Walk, as you head back up the hill and into the forest once again, returning to your starting point and our Trailhead at Bree Community Centre in the village.
