Sadly, in March 1968, Aer Lingus Flight 712 en route from Cork to London crashed into the sea off Tuskar Rock killing all 61 passengers and crew. This coastline had a long history of being treacherous to sailing ships. Rocky outcrops and shifting sandbanks during periods of severe stormy weather have determined this area to be known as “the graveyard of a 1000 ships.” Tuskar Rock Lighthouse was built in 1812 as an aid to navigation. Now automated, it continues to serve as a comforting beacon to the many ships that pass by from all over the world. Rosslare Europort is a modern seaport handling passenger and freight ferries to and from Wales, Spain and France. Look carefully! You are sure to spot one or two ships out on the horizon!! Closer to shore you may spot local fishermen out in their small crafts. They may be collecting crab or lobster pots or just enjoying a day’s angling for bass, mackerel, cod and pollock. The beach below is a very popular and safe bathing spot in the Summer months. Continue to follow the trail towards the playground where you can opt to remain on the Cliff Walk towards beautiful Greenore Point or return to the Village Loop. Make sure to visit the Village Park and Gardens. A special gem and one not to be missed.
