Car Park construction at Shrule entrance to Askamore walks
Location: 52.6835184423002, -6.432922454893361
The growth in the popularity of walking in the past few years has seen an explosion in the numbers of people taking to the trails in Askamore. While the four local trails are mapped from Askamore Church carpark, locals use other entrances to access these safe, well-maintained routes. One of these entrances, at Shrule, is a difficult spot at which to find safe parking.
Discussions regarding provision of a site for parking with Coillte, owners of most of the land on which the Askamore trails are situated, proved fruitful, and a grant application was made.
Askamore Community Council, as a member of Wexford Walking Trails network, has received this grant under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) and hopes to begin work in the coming weeks. A 16 to 20-bay car park along with associated infrastructure such as picnic benches, will be installed just above the existing Shrule entrance.
Askamore Community Council must fund approximately 10% of this project, with the rest being paid for by the ORIS grant. This amounts to a local contribution of €2000.
A table quiz is being organised on Thursday, October 3rd in Askamore Hall to help defray these costs and your support of this worthwhile venture will be very much appreciated.
There is a GoFundMe account set up – details will appear on the Askamore website askamorecommunity.wordpress.com/ and Askamore Community Council FaceBook pages or cash donations may be made – for more details please contact Eilis in the Askamore Community Office on 085 215 6848.
