Spring has arrived in Wexford

There is a special kind of magic that hits the Sunny Southeast each Spring season. Just as the cherry blossoms take their bow, our forest floors undergo a silent, spectacular transformation. For a few fleeting weeks, Wexford’s woodlands are carpeted in a sea of violet blooms.

If you’re looking to catch the bluebells at their peak, lace up your walking boots—here is your guide to the best trails in County Wexford to experience this springtime phenomenon.

Why May is the Magic Month

While timing depends on the warmth of the spring, early to mid-May is traditionally the “sweet spot” for Wexford. The native Irish Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) thrives in our ancient deciduous woodlands, blooming just before the leafy canopy closes over and steals the sunlight. Unusually they also bloom along coastal paths in parts of Wexford with no woodland in sight!

Tips for the Perfect Bluebell Trek

Watch Your Step!

Bluebells are incredibly fragile. Once the leaves are crushed, they cannot photosynthesize, which can kill the bulb for future years. Stay on the waymarked paths to ensure the carpet stays abundant for everyone top enjoy.

Bring the Camera, Leave the Flowers

It’s tempting to pick a bouquet, but native bluebells wilt almost instantly once cut. Plus, they are a vital early-season nectar source for our local bees and butterflies!

The Golden Hour

For the best photos, head out in the early morning or late evening. The low sun filtering through the new beech leaves creates a “glow” effect on the purple flowers that is pure Instagram gold.

Leave no trace

Help keep our trails pristine to protect our environment and available to all to enjoy in harmony with nature.

Make a Day of It

Wexford in May isn’t just about the flora. After your walk, why not swing by a local village for a coffee or an ice-cream?
