The walk will leave from the Vine Cottage Pub Car Park (marked Alternative Start/Finish on the map above) following the Caesar Colclough Trail into the historic Tintern Abbey site. The Abbey was established in 1200 by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. It was home to Cistercian Monks until the dissolution of monasteries by King Henry VIII. The Abbey, together with large areas of land, was then granted to Sir Anthony Colclough. The Colclough family remained in possession of Tintern for some 600 years. The last member of the family vacated the Abbey in 1959. The Abbey is now a designated National Monument in the care of the OPW with the woodland owned by Coillte. Our walk will follow the trails through the woodlands which will be carpeted with Spring Flowers especially wild garlic and bluebells. We will return via the Vine Cottage Pub where refreshments, including drinks, snacks or lunch will be available.
